Shell expands grease manufacturing capacity in Thailand
Shell has significantly enhanced the production capacity at its grease manufacturing plant in Thailand, tripling output from 5,000 to 15,000 tonnes per year. This strategic investment is aimed at meeting the increasing demand for lubricants both domestically and across the Asia-Pacific region.
Jason Wong, executive vice president for Global Lubricants at Shell, emphasised the company’s commitment to sustainable growth and innovation. “With the enhanced capacity and efficiency, we will be able to ensure supply security while supporting the economic growth of the country, enabling sustainable business growth for our partners, as well as powering industries in other countries in the region,” Wong said.
The upgraded facility in Thailand is now Shell’s largest grease manufacturing plant in Southeast Asia and will serve as a crucial export hub, supplying markets in more than 40 countries. The plant’s expansion aligns with Shell’s global strategy to maintain its leading position in the lubricants market, where it has held the top spot for 17 consecutive years.
Dr. Sarawut Kaewtathip, director-general of the Department of Energy Business at Thailand’s Ministry of Energy, praised Shell’s contribution to advancing the energy industry and promoting fair trade in the market. He highlighted the plant’s role in supporting Thailand’s goals to become a sustainable economic and industrial hub in the region.
The enhanced plant also underscores Shell’s dedication to sustainability, operating with 100% solar energy and utilising highly efficient machinery that reduces the need for hot oil by up to 20%, thereby minimising production waste.
Kamolpat Baholyodhin, executive director of the Lubricants Business at Shell Thailand, noted that the expansion coincides with the 50th anniversary of Shell Thailand’s Grease Manufacturing Plant. He expressed pride in supporting the business sector’s growth by enhancing the plant’s flexibility and capability to produce high-quality grease products tailored to diverse industrial needs.
